Week of May 11th, 2026

May 11, 2026 Word of the Week By Emma McDowell

This week’s word: INTEGRITY

Integrity is the quality of being honest, ethical, and having consistent, unwavering moral principles. It represents a state of “wholeness” or moral soundness, where an individual’s actions align with their values even when no one is watching. Integrity is essential for building trust and credibility in personal and professional contexts.

We must not become numb to the apparent lack of integrity in today’s political world. We need to stand strong, and show our integrity at every turn. We need good humans as leaders, who almost always are high in integrity, and who can solve the most complex of issues with patience, kindness and competence.

Key Aspects and Characteristics of Integrity

  • Honesty & Truthfulness: Adhering to high moral standards and telling the truth.
  • Consistency: Aligning words with actions, or “practicing what you preach”.
  • Wholeness: The word is derived from the Latin integer, implying a complete, undivided, or “unimpaired” state.
  • Moral Courage: Doing the right thing despite pressure, popular opinion, current political climate or challenges.
  • Accountability: Taking responsibility for actions and acknowledging mistakes. Accountability is the ability to say “I’m sorry”, or “Please accept my apology.” Everyone makes mistakes. It is how we handle the mistake that makes a difference.

Integrity in Context

  • In the Workplace: Crucial for ethical decision-making, reliability, and nurturing and fostering a trusting company culture.
  • In Leadership: Involves setting a moral example and fostering accountability.

Benefits of Integrity

  • Builds Trust: Creates, strengthens, and maintains, reliable relationships.
  • Enhances Reputation: Results in being viewed as dependable and honorable.
  • Inner Peace: Leads to self-respect and a sense of moral clarity, especially in difficult circumstances.
  • Ethical Culture: Promotes fairness and responsibility within organizations and society.

Having integrity grounds a person. Humbles a person. It makes a person vulnerable at times, which is okay. And integrity instills in a person that history needs to be honored and future behavior needs to be tempered at times.

Are you a person of integrity?
